Mission, Vision and Values

In the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy, Mater offers compassionate service to the sick and needy, promotes an holistic approach to healthcare in response to changing community needs and fosters high standards of health-related education and research.

Following the example of Christ the healer, we commit ourselves to offering these services without discrimination.

Changing Frontiers into Familiar Ground

A Catholic ministry, Mater is committed to a holistic approach to healthcare in response to changing community needs. To serve this mission we must also initiate and embody change. We strive to improve how we deliver patient care, how we keep knowledge and skills relevant, how we advance our understanding of illness and health and how we manage our resources. But why we do so never changes—for God and humanity.

We are not unique in providing compassionate service to the sick and needy. But since 1906, what has distinguished Mater Health Services is our spirited determination to fulfil this vocation regardless of the financial, political or social challenges of the times. In delivering the healing ministry of Jesus we not only respond to, but actively seek to support individuals and families disadvantaged by health or social circumstances. These are the people often forgotten and ignored by mainstream health providers—the projects considered too risky, too difficult, too costly.

Our endeavours in clinical medicine, patient services and research continue to transform frontiers into familiar ground. The concerted pursuit of innovation—to discover, improve, adopt, and adapt—makes participating in change at Mater Health Services exciting and fulfilling.

Innovation may be an advance in technique, technology, or system. For Mater patients and their families, such innovations mean improvements in their health, their sense of wellbeing and their quality of life.

An integrated mission program ensures our values and the Catholic Church's guidelines for ethical healthcare practice are reflected in all that we do. By staying true to this counsel and working in partnership with the community, we continue to effect and embrace change. We continue to inspire and be inspired by those we seek to help.

Our Values

Together, the five Mater Values underpin our relationships with one another, assist us in our decision making, and shape our workplace culture.  At Mater, our values are reflected in all that we do, and are visible to all through the way in which we behave and interact with one another.

Mercy, Dignity, Care, Commitment, and Quality

Mercy: the spirit of responding to one another

By being merciful we can bring forgiveness, joy, peace, kindness, compassion and hope to all in our care.

Dignity: the spirit of humanity, respecting the worth of each person

Each person we encounter in our working day—patients, visitors, co-workers—deserves our respect.

Care: the spirit of compassion

We show that we care for one another by being sensitive to each others' needs and showing kindness.

Commitment: the spirit of integrity

Being committed to those who entrust themselves to us is a responsibility we take seriously.

Quality: the spirit of professionalism

We strive to be leaders in our fields and to combine those skills with humanity and warmth.
