Mater wins climate champion award

Mater continues to win accolades for its Sustainability at Mater program, recently attracting global recognition as a ‘Climate Champion’ in the 2020 Health Care Climate Challenge awards of the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals network.

Mater won a gold award for climate resiliency and a silver award for greenhouse gas reduction (energy). The 2020 Health Care Climate Challenge Awards recognise hospitals, healthcare facilities, health systems and health organisations that demonstrate hard work and dedication in climate mitigation, resilience or leadership. Around 30 institutions from 23 countries took part in the 2016 awards.

Director of Environmental Sustainability Chris Hill said that Mater had embarked on a wide variety of initiatives across the key themes of energy, water, waste, purchasing, facilities design, transport and stakeholder engagement.

“It’s an institution-wide effort involving thousands of staff and saving us more than $4.5 million since 2008,” Mr Hill said.

“This is an ongoing journey but so far we’ve achieved a 13 per cent reduction in carbon emissions, a 40 per cent reduction in transport fuel consumption, and reductions in electricity consumption across the major facilities.

“These achievements were delivered despite tight budgets and an increase in both service throughput and outside temperatures.”

Strategies have included infrastructure and lighting upgrades, policies for air-conditioning (addressing temperature set points and scheduling), as well as staff engagement initiatives involving thousands of staff.

“Importantly, our program recognises the links between health and the environment—we want to ‘do no harm’ in our work, particularly as we know that rising temperatures and climate disasters will increase hospital presentations and other serious impacts on community wellness.

Sustainability at Mater is a win for our business competitiveness, as well as a win for society, and the environment.”
