Healthy Kindy Kids at Mater

A group of kindy students dressed up in scrubs to learn about hospitals and their health during an excursion to Mater Private Hospital Springfield.

St Peter’s Kindergarten Service Leader Melissa Bowman said the children have been involved in hospital role-playing in their own little hospital in the kindergarten room.

“This brought about questions from the children about what a ‘real’ hospital looks like and if it would be possible to arrange an excursion to the hospital. It ties in really closely with the children learning about how their bodies work.”

Mater Private Hospital Springfield Director Justin Greenwell said their team saw it as a great opportunity to increase children’s familiarity with hospitals.

“Often a child’s only experience with a hospital is while they are unwell and undergoing tests and procedures.  At Mater Private Hospital Springfield our focus is on healthcare and keeping the community well, which is why we think it’s important for children to have this positive experience.”

“… and whilst the children are only little, they may choose to work in our hospitals one day. If we can ignite their passion to become a nurse, chef, doctor or one of many other roles in our hospital then that’s a great thing,” said Justin.

On their excursion the kindergarten students took a peek into theatre and visited an inpatient room, before having their vital signs checked to see how fast their heart was beating and seeing how oxygen was being pushed around their bodies.

They met lots of friendly faces including the hospital chef, a physiotherapist and the barista at the coffee shop and rested for storytime and a blessing in Mater’s chapel.

Mater Private Hospital Springfield are proud to share their services with the community and have previously hosted students of St. Peter’s Lutheran College with an interest in a career in healthcare.

“Community engagement is very important to the Springfield Community and Mater is very keen to establish and maintain relationships with schools.”
