Professor Catherine Turner honoured in Australia Day 2017 Awards

Mater Board Director Professor Catherine Turner has been honoured during the Australia Day 2017 Awards, receiving a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division for her significant service to nursing through research into nurse practice and population health, and to professional organisations.
Professor Turner, a Director on the Mater Misericordiae Ltd and Mater Education Limited Boards began her nursing career at Mater, graduating in 1984 with the Mother Alban Memorial Award for Excellence in Nursing.
She has been involved in the tertiary education of nurses since 1992, and in 2005 established the former School of Nursing and Midwifery at The University of Queensland. From 2008 to 2014, Professor Turner was Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, during which time she also received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Flinders University, served as Assistant Commissioner (Nursing) with the former Health Quality and Complaints Commission Qld, served on the Executive of the Council of Deans of Nursing and Midwidery Australia and New Zealand and Chaired the Queensland Fulbright Alumni Association.
Professor Turner has previously been awarded both a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Fulbright Fellowship for her research, has published more than 140 peer-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations and attracted more than $7 million in Australian Research Council, NHMRC and industry grant funding.
Professor Turner was appointed to the Mater Misericordiae Board in 2008, and has been a Director at Mater Education Limited since 2016.
Professor Turner said she was honoured to be recognised, and thanked those people who have 'provided inspiration'.
“I am humbled and truly honoured to be nominated and acknowledged for my contribution to the nursing and midwifery professions and community.
"I have been privileged to work with some talented, courageous and generous mentors, both colleagues and people for whom I have cared, whom I respect and who have provided inspiration," she said.
Appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) acknowledges contributions and services to the community across a broad range of fields, celebrating those who, through their outstanding community service and achievements, enhance our national identity.
