Maternity Research Program

Program Heads: Vicki Flenady and Dr Michael Beckman.

Vicki Flenady is the Acting Research Director for the Mater Mothers’ Research Centre. Michael Beckmann is the Director of Gynaecology.

The Maternity Research Program conducts epidemiological and clinical research into: stillbirth and perinatal mortality prevention particularly focussing on unexplained stillbirths, maternal diabetes and obesity, birthweight standards, and midwifery models of care (including bereavement support, Indigenous care, refugee women and women with substance use in pregnancy) and systematic reviews.

The Maternity Program conducts a large number of Cochrane systematic reviews in the areas of preterm birth prevention and other interventions to improve pregnancy outcomes.
To see all the Cochrane reviews visit the Cochrane Library.

Through the Australian Pregnancy and Childbirth and Neonatal regional support networks, the MMRC provides support for Queensland reviewers in these areas. The MMRC is also the coordinating centre for the WOMBAT (WOMen and Babies Action Through trials) Collaboration which was established to promote and support high quality randomised clinical trials in the perinatal area, in order to improve the health and wellbeing of women and their children.
