Is provision of travel available?

Patients with a Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) Card may be eligible for free transport to and from their specialist appointment. If you have a DVA Card, please contact Department of Veteran Affairs or our specialist clinics on 07 3163 3000 prior to your appointment to discuss transport options. For all other patients, please speak with your referring doctor about any concerns you may have regarding transport to and from your specialist appointment.

Can I bring a support person to my appointment?

You are welcome to bring a support person to the appointment.

How do I get a medical certificate at my appointment?

You need to ask for the medical certificate when you meet with the clinician at your appointment. It may help to take a list of any questions and requests with you to the appointment, including the need for a medical certificate.

How do I get an appointment with a specialist?

The first step is to meet with your local GP to assess your condition and determine whether an appointment with a specialist is needed. If you do require an appointment with one of our specialist clinics, your doctor will provide a referral to us. Your doctor will also speak with you about your options for private or public access to the service you require and expected wait times for the appointment.

How do I get there?

You will need to organise your own transport to and from your appointment. Please find information below on different transport options.

Public Transport

Before travelling on public transport, we recommend you plan your journey by contacting Translink on telephone 13 12 30 or visit the Translink website for further information on routes and schedules.

By bus

Mater Hill bus stop is on the Southern Busway. Buses run every 10 minutes to and from the city.

By train

Mater is an approximate ten minute walk from South Bank train station.

By taxi

There is a dedicated taxi rank located outside Mater Hospital Brisbane and the Salmon Building on Raymond Terrace.

From the airport

By taxi: approximately $60.00 (International) and $70.00 (Domestic) - there may also be additional charges for toll routes (up to $8) and an airport pick up fee (approximately $4).

By train: stations are located at both the domestic and international terminals, with regular services to the city. Airtrain tickets are $16 one-way or $30 return. Children aged to and including 14 years of age, travel free between airport terminal stations and Brisbane City stations when accompanied by a paying adult.

Parking

Mater is committed to offering accessible car parking facilities for the convenience of patients and visitors.
There are three multi-storey car parks on the South Brisbane campus: Hancock Street car park, Mater Hill (East and West) car parks and Mater Medical Centre car park. Please refer our map for details on locations.

How long will it take to receive an appointment with a specialist?

Our specialist teams are highly regarded professionals and demand for their services is high. Mater accepts referrals to our specialist clinics based on the urgency of the need. Whilst we would like to see all patients referred to our services, we ensure we see those patients with the highest need first. This means that we are unable to provide you with an exact waiting time for your appointment.

How long will my appointment take?

Although we endeavour to see all patients at their scheduled appointment time, unfortunately delays can occur. These usually occur because a patient with an urgent clinical need must be seen without delay, resulting in other scheduled appointments being delayed. Please allow two hours for your appointment and bring reading materials, quiet activities and refreshments to make your wait more comfortable.

I'm deaf or hearing impaired – how can I contact the hospital?

If you are deaf or have a hearing or speech impairment, contact the hospital through the National Relay Service on 13 36 67. The hospital will provide you with an Auslan interpreter at no charge.

I need an interpreter; who should I contact?

If you do not speak or understand English, contact the hospital through the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) on 13 14 50. The hospital will provide you with an interpreter at no charge.

I wish to organise accommodation nearby. What are my accommodation options?

Mater provides some accommodation for outpatients and patient's families in Reg Leonard House, as well as general accommodation through Mater Hill Place.

Other local accommodation is available a short distance from the hospital in Brisbane City, Woolloongabba, Highgate Hill and West End.

What are my rights and responsibilities as a patient?

What if I can't make my scheduled appointment?

If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, contact our specialist clinics on 07 3163 3000 as early as possible before the scheduled appointment time.

Please be aware, if you do not attend your scheduled appointment, you will need to return to your referring doctor to request a new referral.

What if my condition worsens before I get to see the specialist?

It is important that you continue to see your referring doctor while you are waiting for your appointment. Your referring doctor will continue to manage your care until your first appointment. If you require urgent medical attention, phone an ambulance or go straight to your nearest hospital emergency department.

What should I bring?

  • Medicare card
  • Pension card / Healthcare card / DVA card
  • List of current medications
  • Your appointment letter
  • Any relevant tests or x-rays
  • Refreshments
  • Any specific tests or materials requested in your appointment letter
  • Reading materials or quiet activities
  • A list of any questions that you wish to ask the specialist

In most situations, for patients under 18 years of age the parent or guardian will need to attend the appointment.

Where do I go?

Mater Specialist Clinics are located within the Mater South Brisbane campus. Your appointment letter will let you know where your appointment is located at the Mater Campus. If you require directions when you arrive at the hospital please go to our information desk on Level 2 of Mater Hospital Brisbane.

Who will my appointment be with?

Your appointment will be with a clinical specialist, which could be a medical officer, nurse or allied health professional. Our specialist clinics are made up of multi-disciplinary teams who work together to deliver the best possible healthcare to our patients.

Will I need to pay?

Many of our clinics are Medicare Bulk Billed. This means if you are a Medicare eligible patient you will incur no out of pocket expenses.
